How to Brainstorm Ideas for Blog Post Titles

We previously discussed how to use tools like Google Keyword Planner to identify blog post topics people are interested in and that are relevant for your business.

Once you go through the process of identifying a relevant topic, how do you actually turn that into blog posts? It’s impossible to cover everything about one topic in a single blog post, so each blog post must be specific enough to make it’s helpful, but broad enough that the content is relevant to multiple people.

1. The “Steps” Blog Post

A “steps” blog post involves articulating a sequence of steps, such as instructions in a recipe, to accomplish a task such as creating a plan, strategy or achieving another goal. For example, if the topic was “startup marketing” titles could be:

  • How To Successfully Market Your Startup With 60 Minutes a Day

2. “Tips” Blog Posts

A “tips” blog post is a collection of hints, hacks or small secrets. It differs from the “steps” blog post type in that the tips don’t have to be taken in an ordered sequence and the tips don’t have to be directly related.

For example:

  • Top 5 Tips to Take your Startup Marketing to the Next Level

3. “Mistakes” Blog Post

A “mistakes” blog post covers common errors people encounter with the topic, or problems that may not be obvious to a beginner. This is a great type of blog posts for topics that are complex and that readers often have trouble with.

For example:

  • Common Mistakes People Make with Startup Marketing (and How to Fix Them)
  • Why Not Having a Startup Marketing Plan is a Mistake

4. “Resource” List Blog Post

This is possibly the easiest type of post to write, because it mostly involves curating existing content. This blog post consists of lists of external blog posts, videos, tools, templates, apps or even round-up of articles from your own blog or website if you’ve written a number of them.

  • A Complete List of Social Media and Marketing Tools for Startups

5. “Reasons” Blog Post

A “reasons” blog post focuses on explaining and educating the reader and is well-suited to topics that you have a lot of in-depth knowledge in.

For example:

  • 5 Reasons Why Your Startup Marketing May Not Be Working
  • 10 Reasons Why Having a Startup Marketing Strategy is as Important as a Sales Strategy
