How to Properly Use Yoast to SEO Your Blog Posts

Posting blogs on your company website will get you pageviews from regulars or people who know how to find you. However, it’s important to utilize Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to help facilitate more traffic to your website through search engines like Google or Bing. At VA Partners, we use a plugin from Yoast to help us properly SEO our blogs, using WordPress. If you aren’t familiar with WordPress, here are some ways that it can benefit your business.

For this example, let’s say that the topic of our blog post is Twitter.

1. Choose a Focus Keyword

Choose a keyword that is relevant to the content of your blog post. In this case we will Twitter. Make sure to use the word twitter consistently throughout the blog post to help with your SEO.

2. Title

Your title should include your focus keyword and should explain what your blog post is about. Choose something catchy that will draw in the reader. Including a number in the title can help to spark interest. Example titles include:

  • Why Your Company Should be Using Twitter
  • The Top 5 Ways to Utilize Twitter
  • The Top 8 Ways to Get More Followers on Twitter

3. Content

Make sure to include your focus keyword in the body of your blog post, however don’t over use it. It will definitely help your SEO to include the focus keyword a few times, but including it too many times could make search engines think you are spam and could work against you – it should be quality over quantity.

4. SEO Title

Your SEO title is limited to 70 characters. It’s acceptable to duplicate your blog post title here if you choose to. If the blog title is longer than 70 characters, shorten it, but make sure your focus keyword is still included.

5. Meta Description

The meta description can be an excerpt from the blog post that highlights what the main focus is. It is the preview text that appears in the search results. Your meta description can include up to 156 characters. Make sure to include your focus keyword at least once! The more attractive your meta description is, the more likely that someone will click through to your website.

6. Categories & Tags

Categories and tags are used to describe what your blog is about and the content being covered. Categories generally describe the topic and tags describe the content. By adding categories and tags to your post it will allow others to find your content easier.
