Volunteer Efforts to increase Team Building

by Tabitha David

A couple weeks ago the team at VA Partners – Mark, Steve, Stephanie, Shelly and myself along with Sommer Maynard from Ramp Communications – volunteered an afternoon at the Daily Bread Food Bank. Their main mission of the Food Bank is to eliminate hunger in the communities in Toronto. The Daily Bread Food bank has a number of different volunteering opportunities available including corporate volunteering, individual volunteering, or hosting your own food drive event.

The team at VA Partners are each allocated a certain amount of hours per quarter that is to be used for volunteering efforts. The afternoon at the Food Bank consisted of sorting food into different categories and packing away full boxes. By the end of the shift we had sorted and packed 2247 pounds of food.

It may be difficult to set aside an entire afternoon for non-work related activity, but there are a number of benefits that come from helping the community.

  • Team work: often times members in a team may not be able to physically work together. The team at VA Partners all prefer to work at different times and locations. This results in the team often working independently. It was great to have the team together and working for a collective cause.
  • Communication: working together for an important cause reduces barriers in communication because all members of the team are there one sole purpose.

The bottom line however isn’t about what volunteering can do for your company but what your company can do to help others. VA Partners recommends taking the time to choose a charity your team members care about and seeking out opportunities to help that cause. If you think the Daily Bread Food Bank is a good fit for your next volunteering efforts connect with them here. The roles I played at VA Partners – Sales, Marketing AND Social Media

My co-op term is officially coming to a close here at Venture Accelerator Partners. I found that when working at a growing company there is a lot of opportunities to engage in a number of different roles. In addition to learning skills about marketing and social media, I was also able to learn about other areas of business. Here are just some takeaways that I learned with the many hats I wore over the past four months.

Marketer                                                                           Free digital photos –  sheelamohan

The first and perhaps the most important thing that I learned was how crucial corporate blogging is. Blogging is an easy way to engage with your audience when it is done consistently. A good way to think of blogging ideas is by figuring out questions that people have and how you could answer them. Try splitting your blogging efforts between different members of the team. I also learned about what and why SEO is so important. There are a number of methods used to increase SEO including using keywords and organizing posts into categories.

Social Media Specialist

Previously I was merely a social media user, but now I feel like I need to be a social media engager. I have learned that social media isn’t just about broadcasting information, it’s about creating a conversation. It is a valuable tool that if used properly can have a great impact on your business. Connect with others on social media by re-sharing content, and developing relationships. It isn’t enough to blindly be using a social media outlet. There should be a strategy and goals in place to see results; whether it’s simply more brand awareness or turning online connections into offline opportunities.

Sales Researcher

I also had the opportunity to be a sales researcher here at VA Partners. I was responsible for locating key contacts and entering information about their company into a CRM system. I learned how important a CRM system is for a business and the amount of detail that goes into organizing one properly. It is also critical to figure out who your key contacts are for each specific client in order to get the best results when connecting with them.

Networker

Among the many firsts I had over the past four months one of the most challenging was learning to network. As recommended by the team I attended a number of events including Entrepreneur 101 at MaRS Discovery DistrictSprouter and Third Tuesday. One of the main things I learned is that networking doesn’t start and end with a conversation; it’s important to be prepared ahead of time and follow up after. For example go into the event with clear goals, make sure you have business cards in a convenient place, and carry a pen and a notepad to write down others’ information. Following the event connect with who you talked to on Linkedin or Twitter.

As you can see, working at a small company allowed me to develop a lot of different types of skills and take on a variety of challenges. I am glad to have had the opportunity to be involved with the many services that VA Partners offers. Check out the “What We Do” section for more information of VA Partners services.

Working as a team… outside the office, inside The Daily Food Bank

By Stephanie Goodman

Yesterday, Mark, Steve, Shelley and myself all spent the afternoon helping out at The Daily Bread Food Bank . The Daily Bread Food Bank (DBFB) is Canada’s largest food bank, providing food to those who are hungry in the community. Although we went as a company (minimum 4 people required), individual volunteer spots are also available.  Every team member at VA Partners is given a certain amount of days per year to volunteer, putting volunteer efforts at the top of our list.

After volunteering together as a team, we highly recommend that any company gets their employees together to help out a cause within or outside of their community. Although many companies love the idea, the main concern comes down to time; they just cannot find an afternoon to dedicate to non-work related tasks. Volunteering, although it may not be considered company time, is time when a team can work together and get to know each other beyond the office. It allows for team building while at the same time, helping a good cause. Just like employers look for well rounded employees, customers look for well rounded companies. A company with involvement outside of their own expertise – such as volunteering at a food bank – is much more attractive than those with no experience within the community.

Along with our team’s work at the DFBD, one of our co-founders, Mark Elliott, hosts an annual curling tournament to raise money for a charity called Farm Radio International. Mark’s grandfather started the fundraiser in 1970s and Mark continues it to this day. Farm Radio International is a Canadian-based, not-for-profit working with approximately 330 radio broadcasters in 39 African countries working to fight poverty and food insecurity.  The fundraiser not only brought in $3,500 during the last event in April, but also brings in old classmates, friends, family and colleagues. Although the tournament is focused on raising money for African countries in need, it is another great way to get to know people and to make connections.

If you’re looking for a place to have your team volunteer all together, or looking for a few individual spots in the morning, afternoon or a full day, get in contact with the Chum City Christmas Wish during November and December. I volunteered time last November for a day and it was amazing to see how many people dedicated their time to helping put presents under the tree for kids across Toronto and the GTA.

Dedicating one afternoon of volunteering every quarter is a small price to pay. For more information on The Daily Food Bank visit their website or get in touch with myself, Stephanie.

If you’re an avid curler, or have an interest in participating in the next curling tournament benefitting the Farm Radio International, get in touch with Mark Elliott for more information.
